Foxglove Fabric Showcase

I have been an Aneela Hoey fan ever since I started sewing. I remember seeing "Sew Stitchy" at my local quilt shop back in 2012 and thinking that it was the cutest fabric ever!! I have just a teeny tiny bit left, plus some of my other favorites by her in my stash and I ration them like crazy! So when Aneela asked me to be part of the fabric showcase for her newest line, Foxglove, I knew I couldn't resist!

Foxglove is a group of 12 prints on cotton, designed by Aneela for Cloud 9 fabrics. She was kind enough to send me a little bundle of each of the prints to use in my La Passacaglia quilt. They are just perfect for fussy cutting... Those foxes are just too cute aren't they!? I love that they look like they are chasing each other around my cog.

The Foxglove Showcase just started yesterday, so there will be many more amazing projects to come featuring Foxglove, so be sure to check out Aneela's blog or IG to keep up with them all. You can also search the hashtags on IG #foxglovefabric and #aneelahoey for more yummy inspiration!

Hope you are having a wonderful start to your week! It's always hard to get back into the groove after a long holiday weekend, isn't it!?!

Happy Sewing!

Backyard Roses Blog Tour // Maker's Tote

I am so happy to be a part of the Backyard Roses Blog Tour! The minute saw the Backyard Roses fabric by Nadra of Ellis and Higgs for Riley Blake, I fell in love. Y'all know I am a sucker for a good floral and these florals are perfect!

I have been wanting to make a Maker's Tote for a while so I figured this was the perfect time.

The Maker's Tote is a great pattern. Anna of Noodlehead is a genius when it comes to pattern writing so I expected no less.

I made the smaller version of the bag and plan to send it to my mother-in-law for Mother's Day. It's a darling little bag that is perfect for keeping sewing notions or whatever you want in it. It totally reminds me of the old school doctor bags- which I think was the inspiration for Anna when she came up with the pattern. So cute!

I love the gusseted pockets on the inside and the gusset on the side of the bag. Little details like that are what I love seeing in a pattern and make the pattern exciting to me.

I didn't make any modifications to the bag- it was perfect as is in my opinion. :)

Be sure to check out the other projects that have been made as part of the tour- they are amazing!
4/25 - Why Not Sew
4/27 - Allie & Me
5/6 - Oh How Sweet
5/10 - Greenfietsen
5/12 - Ellis & Higgs

Hope you have a wonderful week! Thanks for stopping by!
xoxo, Ashley

P.S.- These last few week have been so busy! I am getting ready to go to Quilt Market for the first time ever and I am beyond excited! (Let me know if you'll be there too- I'd love to meet you!)

I'm making several things for some of the fabric designers to display in their booths, which is super fun, but has kept me busy! I'll share those projects soon! :)

My Fat Quarter Shop Blogger Bundle

Have y'all seen the fun bundles that the Fat Quarter Shop has fabric designers and bloggers put together?
These bundles are so fun. They consist of 12 prints that are handpicked and put together in a special bundle available only at The Fat Quarter Shop.
I was so flattered when the ladies at FQS asked me to put together a bundle.
Drum roll please.............. Here it is!!
My bundle will be available in February 2016. I'm just so excited about it.  When I was choosing my prints, I knew that I wanted to mix some of the new Cotton + Steel lines that were just previewed at Quilt Market in October, as well as some of Bonnie + Camille's new Vintage Picnic line, and I threw in a darling print by October Afternoon as well. I just love these prints together and know that they will be even better in person! I can't wait to get my bundle and make something special with it.

One thing I love about The Fat Quarter Shop, is that you can sign up to receive email's when things are in stock... so if you want a little reminder sent to your email to let you know when it is available,  here is a link to my bundle: http://www.fatquartershop.com/ashley-of-crafter-by-nights-bloggers-choice-fat-quarter-bundle

Plus, y'all know you can count on me to let you know when it is available as well.
Hope you have a wonderful day!
Happy Sewing!
xoxo, Ashley

P.S. - I hope that y'all will tag me on IG or email me any photos of things that you are making with my bundle.

Whipping My Fabric Stash Back Into Shape | Review of Polar Notions + Giveaway

I've spent the past couple weeks organizing my house to get ready for a cross country move from the South to the Midwest at the end of this month. One of the things that needed the most attention was my craft room.

Back in 2012, I came across an idea to use cardstock comic boards as mini fabric bolts and got my fabric stash all organized. In the beginning the comic boards were great, but over the years, they started to become a problem for me.
Like I said, the day I wrapped all of my fabric around the nice new boards, things were awesome. They seemed sturdy enough as long as I wasn't wrapping more than two yards on them. Since I sew just about every day and am always "shopping" my stash before I head out fabric shopping, those boards were getting wrapped and unwrapped left and right. I started to notice that after I would unwrap/rewrap the fabric around the board a couple of times the boards started to tear, bend, and not look so neat. So I started throwing out the boards periodically as they got ugly and never bothered to replace them. Before I knew it, I was back to my original problem of having piles of fabric and not being able to find what I was looking for.
I've been keeping my smaller cuts of fabrics in my Raskog Cart from Ikea. I try to keep things organized by colors and it's been mostly functional, but after a while it too started to fall into disarray.
It's so full that each time I pull a cut of fabric out, the surrounding fabrics come out as well, and trying to put the fabric back without having to reorganize a whole row of fabric is tricky.
I know some people swear by the comic boards, but after using them for 3 years I knew that I wanted something more permanent that I wouldn't have to always be replacing. Plus, my raskog cart system for smaller cuts just wasn't cutting it! ;) I am pulling fabrics on a weekly if not daily basis, so I needed to switch it up in the organization department. It was time to bring in the big guns.

I had the opportunity to test out some Polar Notion  fabric organizers last November and the difference was considerable! I started with just a handful of boards, but I got hooked and knew that I wanted to fully convert my stash and get rid of the comic boards all together.

There are 3 reasons that I love Polar Notions so much:

1. They come in two sizes: the original size (11 3/4" x 7 1/2") and the fat quarter size (6 3/8" x 4")
This will make more sense if you have used the comic boards, but the comic boards are smaller than the original polar notion boards and are an awkward size to wrap the fabric because I had to fold it in thirds to wrap it. They are just the right sizes that you just fold the fabric in half and it fits perfectly.
(Here is a video that better explains how they work.)

2. They are made out of sturdy plastic and do not bend like the comic boards. They say you can wrap an entire bolt of fabric on one of the original sized polar notion boards. I don't quite have an entire bolt of fabric to test out that theory, but I did wrap 7 yards onto one and had no problem doing it. The fat quarter sized Polar Notion boards can fit up to a yard of fabric on them so they are perfect for quilters that buy small cuts of fabric.

3. The Bolt Buddy Clips. They are an awesome way to secure your fabric to the boards. When I was using the comic boards, I used straight pins to secure my fabric to the boards. After a couple years of being in the fabric, a couple of my pins started to wear out and luckily I caught them in time and no fabric was ruined. I had no idea a straight pin would start rusting like that! (Both the clips and the boards are archival safe so no worries when using them to store your fabrics)

AFTER:

I have wrapped all of my fabric on both sizes of the Polar Notion boards and used the bolt buddy clips to secure them. I am so happy with the result! My stash is nice and neat again and a lot more manageable.

The shelf that holds my yardage looks similar to when they were wrapped on the comic boards, but it is so much neater now. I love that they stand up straight and hold their shape no matter how many times you wrap or unwrap the fabric.
The biggest change in my stash storage is my fat quarters (and smaller cuts of fabric- I have eighth yards, quarter yards, half yards on these too). I can't get over how much I love being able to see what I have now that it is neatly organized on a shelf. They are so cute and tiny! I just love them!

I searched high and low for the perfect shelf to organize my fat quarter Polar Notion boards and I found it! There were a couple more expensive options, but in the end budget won out, and Ikea saved the day. (And in all honestly, I like this Ikea option better the other two shelves I found that would have worked so the fact it was cheaper was just a plus. It's almost like this shelf was made for these!)

I used this Besta Frame ($35) and bought 2 shelves ($3 per shelf), which made it just the right height to store 3 rows of mini fabric bolts.
I bought two frames (with 2 shelves each) and I plan to hang them side by side on the wall in my new craft room. They will look like cabinets minus the doors. :)

So far I was only able to get just a couple shelves organized so I could take some pictures for my post, but like I mentioned above, we are in the process of moving so I had to start boxing up my freshly wrapped fabric and wasn't able to take pictures of it all completely set up.
As soon as I get to my new place, and have all of my shelves up with fabric put on them, I will do a post with my entire craft room and pictures of the full makeover.

GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

BONUS:
Polar Notions is doing a giveaway and 4 lucky readers will receive 10 Polar Notion Organizer Boards (2 readers will receive the original size boards and 2 readers will receive the fat quarter size boards).
To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment with your email so I can contact you and let me know which boards you would like to receive- the original or fat quarter sized boards.
4 winners will be chosen at random and notified by email on Monday July 20, 2015.

Four winners were chosen at random, congrats to-
This sounds like something I really need; my fabric is out of control and impossible to look through. I'd be happy with either size but more so with the original size.

These boards are great. I would use the larger size more than the smaller.
Good luck on your move. :)
What a great organizational shelf. I would love to win the fat quarter boards. Thanks for the tip and giveaway.
So pretty!! I have such a soft spot for organized fabric in rainbow order! :) I would love to win the fat quarter size for sure! :)

Thanks for stopping by! Happy Sewing!

Cotton + Steel Mini Quilt Swap

Quilt swaps are all the rage on Instagram right now! It seems like every week, there is a signup for a new swap. One of the things that is so fun about the swaps is that most of them are open to anyone who wants to join. It is a great way to make new sewing friends and participate- whether you are a blogger, or just love to sew.
If you have never done a swap before, you should try it. It is a lot of fun! Once you sign up, you are given a partner to create a mini quilt for (someone different will be making one for you). In each swap I have been in, the partners have been kept secret so that you don't know who will be creating your mini and your partner won't know that you are creating the mini for them. In larger quilt swaps, you are put into a smaller group and each group has a "swap mama" who is in charge of making sure that things run smoothly. The group usually has a separate hashtag, so when you search that hashtag you know that one of the quilts in that hashtag will be sent your way.

This was my third swap and I definitely plan to do more in the future! :) The best way to stay in the loop and hear about upcoming swaps is to follow all of your favorite quilters/sewing friends on IG. Word usually gets around pretty quick once a new swap is announced. (You could also search hashtags for mini swaps too.) Each swap is different and has different rules, so just make sure you read the rules before you sign up to make sure it is going to be a good fit for you. :)

A few months back, there was a signup for the Cotton + Steel Mini Quilt Swap (#cottonandsteelminiquiltswap), hosted by Modern Stitchin Mama. I love Cotton + Steel, so I knew it would be a fun swap. I have been wanting to create a mini sampler quilt, so it was the perfect time. It was definitely a labor of love and took a while to make, but I loved making each block.

A lot of people have asked on IG if there is a pattern to make this quilt and the answer is yes... and no.  I used a pattern for several of the blocks, but I also improved and made some without patterns too.

So I thought I would link y'all to the blocks that DO have patterns for them.
(Most of them are foundation paper piecing patterns.)

January Quilt block by Lady Harvatine (I printed mine at 50% so it's 6" square)

For my rainbow, I used 2 striped pattern pieces from the Pickle Dish pattern from Kaffe Fassett's Quilt Romance book and then pieced them together like a rainbow and then appliquéd the rainbow to the quilt block.

For the crazy patch quilt label, I used this pattern.

When the quilt was all finished, I wasn't sure that I would be able to part with it! ha ha But alas, the mailing date came and it was time for my mini to go to a new home.

Even though it was so hard to part with my mini quilt, I was sent the most gorgeous mini in return from Crystal @keystonecharmquilts. I am so head over heels for this mini! It's absolutely perfect in every way! I love the way that she switched the fabric placement and did a different take on a traditional kaleidoscope quilt block! I can't wait to hang it on my wall!

Thanks for stopping by!
Happy Sewing!

AMH Little Folks Voile Quilt

Remember when I went fabric crazy 2 years ago and bought a half yard of every AMH print in voile that I could get my hands on?  It was a brief, break of insanity... But- in my defense- they were on a $6 sale! I couldn't help myself!!  They are the softest, yummiest, amazing fabrics ever! I am obsessed!
Shortly afterwards, I joined a Fabric-aholics Anonymous program.
"Hi- My name is Ashley and it has been 1 day since I made a fabric purchase."

JUST KIDDING!

That's only for people that can't control their fabric purchases.  I don't have a problem... Do I? ;) Mwahahahahaha!!

Ok... In all reality- it was one of the best fabric purchases I've ever made! No regrets here! Just come snuggle this quilt, and you'll see why!

I decided to make a square patchwork quilt first. I didn't dare slice and dice those gorgeous fabrics too much! I went with a 6 inch squares to create my quilt top- 14 squares across, 14 squares down- which makes it roughly 6.5' squared. Perfect for two to snuggle on the couch with!
Once I pieced the quilt, I decided to hand quilt it to make it extra soft and give it a good drape. I used Valdani pearl cotton in varying colors and opted for orange peel quilting. (I seriously cut a piece of cardboard and used it as my template and traced the design with a washable fabric marker- MacGuyver moment people!)
Its backed with voile and I used Soft and Warm batting, which is pretty thin, so this quilt is super lightweight and thin. I can use it year round!
I worked at a tortoise pace while hand quilting it, so it took forever (over a year start to finish on this quilt- which is so unlike me! ha ha) I would just pick it up every month or so and work on it while sitting on the couch in the evenings, but it was always there in the back of my mind- that looming UFO (un-finished object) project begging me to finish it. So when our family recently moved, I unpacked this beauty and worked on it for a couple weeks straight until it was complete!
It's been in use for a few months now, and everyone in our family fights over getting to use it! If all four of us squeeze onto the love seat, we can just fit underneath it (if nobody moves! ha ha)
I love that they all love it as much as I do! :)

Well, I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend! Mine is full of stuffing and addressing our family Christmas cards, the ward Christmas party, and a day trip to one of my new favorite cities- Charlotte! Hope I can squeeze in some sewing time too! ;)

xoxo, Ashley

P.S.- The winner of the Cotton + Steel Splash Bundle is:

Polar Notion Fabric Board Giveaway

When it comes to fabric storage, I love organization and neatness. Nothing worse than shoving your beautiful fabrics in a bin or closet where you have to dig through them every time you need something! Last year, after getting sick of doing just that- digging through bins, I decided to make a sewing shelf dedicated to storing my notions and patterns.
I knew that I wanted to have mini "fabric bolts" to store my fabric on and at the time, the only thing I could find that would work were cardboard comic book boards. They worked alright, but since they are made of cardboard, you can imagine that they aren't very sturdy and bend easily- especially if I have more than a yard of fabric on the board/bolt.

A couple weeks ago, I was contacted by one of my favorite shops- PaperPieces.com and they wondered if I wanted to try out Polar Notion Boards.
I was intrigued so I said "yes" and they sent me one 10 pack of the plastic boards to try out. I was skeptical at first because my boards were working fine, but once they arrived I was sold. They are made of a stiff plastic and the fabric wraps around them so nicely! Not only that, but they are acid free... so they aren't going to damage your fabrics over time. I got the original size and they are just the right size- about the same height as my favorite quilting magazine, so they fit perfectly on a book shelf. They do have smaller sizes though if you are looking for fat quarter size bolts. How cute is that!?! I just love them! I can't wait to order more to replace my bent up cardboard bolts.
I love how you can go from a pile of unruly fabric to your own personal "fabric shop" of neatly organized fabric bolts. It really is the perfect answer to fabric organization!

So if you are ready to get organized, right now is the perfect time- all Polar Notions are 20% off until Sunday Nov. 16th. So run over and take advantage of that! You won't be disappointed! :)

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

And SUPER BONUS- They are giving one lucky Mommy by day... Crafter by night reader a 10 pack of either size Polar Notion boards try out!! All you have to do to enter the giveaway is leave a comment with your email and I will choose a winner Tuesday November 18.

Ruby Star Shining Skirt

I stumbled across this darling skirt on the Lucky Lucille blog a little over a year ago and I fell in love with it. The fabric is so charming and Rochelle did such a good job with creating a skirt that showed off the fabric just right- she definitely has an eye for vintage-y fabrics and clothing! Her style is so fun and fits her so well!

I immediately started looking for some fabric just like it...  I did a little research and found a couple yards (it's called Ruby Star Rising Starlet in Aspic by Melody Miller) and put it away in my stash for about a year. I was kinda nervous to make a skirt for myself since all I had been making lately were quilts, bags, and whatnot... A skirt seemed tricky! Plus, I am always nervous to cut into a piece of fabric that I really love!

After looking at the fabric sit on my shelf for about a year, I took it down determined to make a skirt. I considered drafting my own pattern but decided to go with a store bought pattern... less headache! I used the New Look 6872 pattern and overall I feel like it turned out pretty good. It's similar to Rochelle's skirt (although, I definitely don't pull off the vintage look as well as she does!) but I really like the sash/belt option of the pattern I followed.

Hope you are all having a wonderful summer! I've been all over the place since we left Ohio... Kansas to Utah and out to California back to Utah then to Texas and finally back to Utah for a few more weeks until we trek across the US again to the East coast and settle into our home there. It's been a fun, busy summer so far... but I'm looking forward to unpacking our things and start sewing again! I've been working on my hexie quilt all summer, since it's an easy take along project for road trips and is all hand pieced- but I am getting the itch to put the pedal to the metal on my sewing machine again!
